I couldn't believe it when I opened my Feb. issue of Martha Stewart and saw these.
I have been decorating with sentimental objects for years.
When Big Sister was born I made this shadow box. It has the blanket, booties, and bonnet that she came home from the hospital in. The photo is one of the first ones we took of her once she was home.
I later added the lock of hair from her first hair cut. I love having these things all in one place.
When Little Sister came along, I did the same thing for her.
This is the gown my dad and his brother's and sister's came home from the hospital in. It is also the gown I came home from the hospital in and that I brought both my girls home in.
This lovely was a gift from Sweet Daddy on our honeymoon.
I have a beautiful collection of costume jewelry that was my Grandmother's. Some of it is on display and other pieces I still wear.
This pretty little purse was my mother's when she was a girl, each of my girls had their 2 year old pictures made with it.
Every time I walk by one of these it brings back sweet memories. I was so glad when I saw in Martha that other people appreciate art made out of their sentimental treasures.

Lovely additions to your home. I have three baby dresses worn for christenings in a guest room. I love seeing family pieces around the house. I also have a handbag (not shown). You can see the dresses this week at AtticMag on the tour of my home. The guest room is in tomorrow's post.

Oh how wonderful! I've been thinking about shadowboxing my Christening Gown for years, but just haven't done it. (My only girl was born too big to wear it! I was teeny she was ummm...not LOL)
I do a lot of decorating with sentimental treasures and pictures. I so love having them out and displayed vs. having them sit in a box.

Oh, I love those shadow boxes. I especially like the one of Martha's with the ballet slippers. I want to do that with dd's. I know I was keeping them for some reason. lol
Oh, you have done such a great job... inspiring. Martha wouldn't be doing so well if it weren't for all the other talented folks around her.

we decorate with sentimental items all the time, but I have yet to make any shadow boxes. Seeing yours (and Martha's ) I'm inspired to put some things together now.
I've always loved the look of shadow boxes. I'm going to have to fight my sisters for a framed doll that belonged to my great-grandma. It is one of my favorite thing hanging in my mothers home. I'd like to follow your lead and frame some of the precious things I have around my house.
As for the plates. I will show you how I did them. It doesn't require good drawing skills. You could do it. If you don't believe me, I would make you some. Of course the thought of sending you some of my real work scares me. Pictures can hide flaws.

i'm not surprised at all to see these gorgeous sentimental treasures framed. it ALL seems so like you. they are all just beautiful. i just saw a really really modern looking photo, in a modern looking house BUT they had their baby's dress & booties framed front & center. i loved it. it doesn't matter what anyone's style is - these are timeless pieces.
i think like you & your friendship you must offer all your real life friends. you are timeless & classic.

I love the way you displayed your treasures! I have one from my wedding, but I still need to make them for my two kids...you have just inspired me to get it done!
Very pretty. I have all of my kids' things like that in boxes, but it has always been my intent to frame them like that. And I have my daughters first ballet shoes and leotard to put in her some day I hope studio in a frame. Thanks so much for sharing-I love these!

I cannot think of a better way to be thrifty than to use what you have! And like you, I am sentimental. I love to be surrounded by things I love. Things that hold meaning. Things that are our family history. I think it passes that importance onto our children.

I'm a sentimental sappy too, girl. I love your cherished pieces. I have the gown hubby and the suit that both boys came home in. I have it out but have considered shadow boxing it myself.

I love your shadow boxes! They are beautiful!! My favorite is the frames with the locks of hair in it.... I definately want to copy this. At one model home we were looking at we saw a shadow boxes with vintage hats in them in a little girls room. I loved this idea and am now searching eBay for just the right hats to recreate this! Thanks again for sharing your shadow boxes... oh, I homeschool my daughters too. It's a decision I don't regret at all..in fact, it's the best decision I've ever made! Have a great weekend! -April
